User Manual for PurePeak Super Light Avalanche Shovel
Instructions for Use
1. Assembly
Before assembly:
- Remove snow and ice from all connection points and button holes.
- Check that all parts are clean and undamaged.
The shovel consists of three main parts:
- Shovel blade
- Lower telescopic tube (with the button that locks into the blade)
- Upper telescopic tube (with handle attached)
Step 1 – Connect the blade and the lower tube
- Hold the blade with the socket facing upward.
- Take the lower tube and align its spring button with the hole on the blade socket.
- Slide the tube fully into the socket until the button clicks out through the hole.
- Tug gently on the tube to confirm it is locked in place.
Step 2 – Extend and lock the shaft
- Hold the lower tube with one hand and pull the upper tube (with the handle) outward.
- Continue pulling until the spring button on the upper tube clicks out through the locking hole in the lower tube.
- Check that the button is fully protruding and firmly locked.
- The handle must not slide or rotate after locking.
Step 3 – Final check before use
- Verify that both spring buttons are visible and fully engaged.
- Shake the shovel lightly to confirm all parts are securely locked.
- The shovel is now ready for use.
Important:
- Always ensure both buttons are locked before starting to dig.
- Do not use the shovel if any button is stuck or partially engaged.
- If snow or ice prevents locking, clear the holes and try again.
2. Usage
- Always operate the shovel in its fully extended configuration, with both spring buttons locked in place. Never dig while the shaft is partially collapsed.
- The shovel is equipped with a T-shaped handle designed to suit users wearing gloves.
- Before every use, visually inspect the shovel. Because the shovel is made from carbon composite, check for any cracks, dents, or other visible damage on the tubes or blade.
- Inspect the bond line between the steel edge and the carbon blade for any signs of delamination or separation.
- If any damage or irregularity is found, stop using the shovel immediately and contact the manufacturer for inspection or repair.
- Use the shovel only for avalanche rescue and snow excavation, in avalanche debris or compacted snow.
- Hold the handle with one hand and the shaft with the other to maintain full control and leverage. Avoid twisting or applying side forces that may stress the locking mechanisms.
- The shovel is not suitable for use on rock, frozen soil, or gravel, as these surfaces can cause permanent damage to the blade or shaft.
- When cutting through icy layers, use short, firm strokes and avoid striking solid obstacles.
- If snow or ice blocks the button mechanisms, stop digging, clear the openings, and verify that both locks are secure before continuing.
3. Disassembly and Transport
After use, clean and dry the shovel before packing it.
Follow these steps:
Step 1 – Collapse the shaft
- Hold the lower tube with one hand and press the spring button on the upper tube with the other hand.
- While keeping the button pressed, slide the upper tube completely into the lower tube.
Step 2 – Separate the blade
- Hold the blade socket with one hand and press the spring button on the lower tube.
- While pressing the button, pull the tube straight out of the blade socket.
- If the connection is tight, move the tube gently back and forth while keeping the button pressed.
Step 3 – Prepare for packing
- Wipe off any remaining moisture or snow.
- Cover the steel blade edge or wrap it to avoid damaging other equipment.
- Keep the shaft and blade together in the backpack so that parts cannot move around.
Safety and care:
- Never force the tubes together or apart without pressing the button fully.
- Keep fingers away from button holes when sliding the tubes.
- Do not twist the shaft when disconnecting the blade.
Storage
- Clean and dry the shovel after each use.
- Store in a dry and shaded environment, away from direct sunlight or chemicals.
- Recommended storage temperature range: –10 °C to +30 °C.
Maintenance and Inspection
- Inspect the shovel before each use, after any significant impact, and at least once per year.
- Ensure the button clips move freely and show no signs of damage or corrosion.
- After-market repair and replacement of components (handle, tubes, and plug) are available from the manufacturer to extend the product’s service life.
Warnings
- Inspect for wear or damage before every use.
- Do not modify or attempt unauthorised repairs.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Use only for its intended purpose.
Lifespan
The designed service life of the shovel is 10 years under normal use conditions.
